After a string of four wins, the Salpointe Catholic Lancers's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 52-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of Santiago. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Salpointe Catholic came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked fifth in Arizona, while Santiago is ranked 70th in California).
Salpointe Catholic's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Allison Even, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Aryanna Kollasch, who scored 11 points.
Salpointe Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Santiago, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
Salpointe Catholic will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Catalina Foothills at 7:00 p.m. on January 9, 2024. Santiago and Oak Ridge will face off at 10:30 a.m. on December 30th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Oak Ridge is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.
