Given Holy Cross' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 613th, while John Paul II is ranked 1259th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Aaron Garcia continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 34 points and 12 rebounds. He is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Dominic Hernandez, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why John Paul II lost, one person who can't be blamed is Joseph Mata. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 23 points and 17 rebounds. Mata has been hot recently, having posted ten or more rebounds the last 16 times he's played. Eliseo Garcia was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Holy Cross pushed their record up to 15-10 with that win, which was their third straight at home. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 37 points. As for John Paul II, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 13-23.
Holy Cross will head out on the road to face off against Hill Country Christian School of Austin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
