Pueblo Central has gone 8-2 against Pueblo West recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Pueblo Central Wildcats will host the Pueblo West Cyclones at 7:30 p.m. Pueblo Central has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with three straight losses, while Pueblo West will come in with four straight wins.
Last Saturday, Pueblo Central was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 52-48 to Mesa Ridge. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 129th, while the Grizzlies are ranked 18th).
The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Tayvon Evans and Bryce Riehl. Riehl had a solid game and posted 17 points and three steals. Meanwhile, Evans did his best for the losing side, putting up six points and nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Pueblo West beat Golden 49-43 back in December of 2024. The 49-point effort marked the Cyclones' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Pueblo Central better focus on containing Andrew Trujillo and Ezekiel Stump as the pair were huge in Pueblo West's win. Trujillo dropped a double-double on 11 points and 14 boards, while Stump went 6 of 9 on his way to 15 points. Trujillo is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down ten or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Marek Crowley, who put up eight points.
Pueblo Central's defeat dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Pueblo West, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Pueblo Central has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 29.3 boards per game. However, it's not like Pueblo West struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Pueblo Central couldn't quite finish off Pueblo West in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 and fell 62-60. Will Pueblo Central have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
