5A Region III District 17 recap September 24, 2013
Fans got a thrill when Nick Hooper and Zach Duncan connected against Cy-Ridge. The connection went for 94 yards, the longest such play in 5A Region III District 17 this season.
Cy-Woods scaled the state rankings by moving to 275 from 377 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Wildcats climbed the ranks as a result of defeating the Rams 28-26.
GARRETT PENA threw for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns. He went 11-27 with 2 interceptions.
PENA put up the best numbers in passing as Cy-Ridge fell to Cy-Woods. PENA's favorite target this week was KEMAH SIVERAND, who caught 3 passes for 126 yards.
Hooper was a passing and rushing force as the Wildcats bested Gary Thiebaud's team. He completed 12 passes for 214 yards and also ran for 105 yards. Hooper's key target this week was Duncan, who caught 4 passes for 141 yards.
Hooper was the best running back in the league this week. Teammate Samuel Stewart added to the ground attack by rushing for 57 yards.
Duncan was the best wideout in 5A Region III District 17 this week as Cy-Woods beat the Rams. Mason Roberts helped Cy-Woods' passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 94 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Cy-Ridge's PENA and DARIOUS CRAWLEY have proven to be a lethal combination. PENA has thrown for 650 yards this season, while CRAWLEY has 18 catches for 376 yards. Romeo Williams from Cypress Lakes leads the league in rushing with 217 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Cypress Springs takes on second place Cypress Creek. Cypress Springs bested the Spartans last week, while Cypress Creek beat Cypress Falls.
The Wildcats made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,493 from 3,646. The advance stemmed from a 28-26 victory over the Rams last week.
