There's no place like home for The Mohave Thunderbirds, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Friday. They took down Safford 28-14 on Friday.
Jonathon Williams had a dynamite game for Mohave, rushing for 151 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.9 yards per carry. Williams was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 57 yards. Joe Yoney JR was another key contributor, throwing for 185 yards and a touchdown.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Safford to a paltry 233 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Mohave's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Blake Moore and his two sacks.
Manuel Dawson and Jojo Ruelas certainly did their best on Friday to try and avoid the loss. Dawson picked up 115 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Ruelas only threw for 176 passing yards and failed to score a touchdown.
Mohave's victory was their eighth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 10-1. It's not like the team was facing easy opposition over that stretch either, as it included 9-1 Lee Williams and 9-2 Paradise Honors (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 55.6% over those games). As for Safford, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-7.
Mohave will be playing at home against Blue Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Arizona (Blue Ridge is ranked 64th, while Mohave is ranked 40th). Safford does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
