The Apex Cougars will head out to square off against the Wakefield Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Apex is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victor by a 15-7 margin over Green Level on Monday. With that win, the Cougars brought their scoring average up to 7.5 runs per game.
Aleyna Ortiz was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over six innings pitched. Ortiz was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Maggie Austin and Leah Kendall did most of the damage at the plate: Austin went 4-for-5 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI, while Kendall scored four runs and stole Three bases. while going 4-for-5. What's more, Austin posted two runs, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucy Nelson, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base.
Apex was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .405. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Wakefield waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Crusaders 10-1. Considering the Wolverines have won three games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Brenna Colleran, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Maddy Lampman also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.
Wakefield pushed their record up to 6-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Apex, their record is now 3-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Apex hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Wakefield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Apex was able to grind out a solid win over Wakefield in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 8-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for Apex since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
