III Section III recap Oct. 23, 2012
Desert Edge extended the longest winning streak in III Section III this week by beating Buckeye, 21-7. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Saguaro led the league in scoring this week after putting up 55 points on Arcadia. Luke Rubenzer threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 140 yards in the win.
Elijah Marks was the best wideout in the league this week as Desert Edge topped the Hawks. Marks racked up eight receptions for 180 yards. C.J. Heard helped Desert Edge's passing attack out by catching three balls for 35 yards.
Ryan Finley put up the best numbers through the air as Paradise Valley bested Cactus Shadows. He finished with 27 completions for 355 yards and three touchdowns. Finley's favorite target this week was Joey Gatewood, who caught 11 passes for 111 yards.
Antwain Marlowe was the most productive running back in III Section III this week. In 13 carries, he ran for 177 yards as Washington bested Buckeye. James Rasmussen also contributed to the rushing game with 18 yards on the ground.
6-foot-4 quarterback Finley of the Trojans is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2790. He has also thrown 29 touchdowns. On the ground, Thunderbird's Kani Benoit has rushed for 1651 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Marks. The Desert Edge star has 37 catches for 855 yards.
The Sabercats' Rubenzer is a mere 79 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Rubenzer has rushed for 921 yards on 82 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Scorpions take on Sierra Linda. Desert Edge is in first place, while the Bulldogs are in 10th place.
Apache Junction made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,313 from 10,891. The improvement was the result of 40-7 victory over Combs last week.
