Baseball Recap: Martin Triumphs

Martin posted their closest victory since February 22nd on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Mission Eagles 7-5. This was a revenge game for the Tigers: when they faced off against the Eagles last Tuesday, they had to take a 8-3 loss.

Alan Ornelas was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in February. He was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. He also hit a triple, marking his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Omar Garza, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and two doubles. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI. Another player making a difference was Edgar Garcia, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Martin hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most three strikeouts in three consecutive matches.

With the victory, Martin broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 9-5-2. The slump could be explained by some tough opposition over that stretch, namely Mission, Mission Veterans Memorial, and Mission Veterans Memorial. As for Mission, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Martin will welcome Cigarroa at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Martin's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Cigarroa's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mission, they will challenge Mission Veterans Memorial at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Mission 3.3, Mission Veterans Memorial 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
