Basketball Recap: Whitharral Piles Up the Points Against Amherst

Whitharral waltzed into their game on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Amherst Bulldogs 71-17. The Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 13 matches by 26 points or more this season.

Whitharral was led to victory by Paige Smith and Madi Chavez. Smith went 13 for 19 on her way to 31 points, while Chavez went 7 of 16 on her way to 17 points in addition to eight assists and six steals. That makes it 19 consecutive games in which Smith has scored at least a third of Whitharral's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylee Kristinek, who posted ten points along with five boards and three steals.

Whitharral smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in four consecutive contests.

Whitharral has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.7 points per game. As for Amherst, they are on a 15-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-13.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Whitharral will welcome Meadow at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Whitharral knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past four matches -- so hopefully Meadow likes a good challenge. As for Amherst, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Wellman-Union at 6:00 p.m.
