There's no place like home for the South Pike Eagles, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Friday. Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 60-27 blowout they got at home against Wesson. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory South Pike has managed all season.
South Pike was led to victory by Jovon Leavy and Lavell Thompson. Leavy scored 17 points, while Thompson scored 13 points along with eight rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which Leavy has scored at least 25% of South Pike's points. John Harrell was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Despite the loss, Wesson still got an impressive performance from Austin Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson set a new season high mark in steals with five. Another player making a difference was Brynn Brice, who scored four points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Wesson struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
South Pike's victory bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Wesson, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-13.
South Pike will head out on the road to face off against Jefferson County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Jefferson County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully South Pike likes a good challenge. As for Wesson, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Franklin County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
