AAA Southeastern recap Oct. 3, 2012
Western Branch extended the longest winning streak in AAA Southeastern this week by beating King's Fork, 56-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Western Branch took down the Bulldogs 56-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Josh Marriner ran for 160 yards in the win.
Greg Gibson's team's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. C.J. Thomas threw for 74 and two touchdowns and Donte Shepard had 46 yards receiving. Sydney Wellons helped Western Branch's passing attack out by catching one ball for 17 yards.
Grassfield's Blake LaRussa and Paris Smith have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. LaRussa has thrown for 517 yards this season, while Smith, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has nine catches for 300 yards. The Bruins' Marriner leads the league in rushing yards with 844.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Western Branch and the Grizzlies. The Bruins enters the contest ranked eighth in the state, while Grassfield ranks 16th.
There should be lots of points scored when Western Branch and Marty Asprey's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Bruins comes in having scored 221 this season, while the Grizzlies have scored 143. Western Branch scored 56 points last week as it topped King's Fork.
The Bruins led AAA Southeastern in scoring this week after putting up 56 points on Cecil Phillips's team. Marriner in the win.
