The Gorham Rams will face off against the South Portland Red Riots at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gorham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Gorham is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Windham, who was ranked ninth at the time (Gorham was ranked 15th). The Rams came up short against the Eagles on Tuesday, falling 12-2. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Rams, who until this match were averaging 3.69 runs allowed.
Gorham saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bella McBrady, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, South Portland got the win against Marshwood on Tuesday by a conclusive 10-1. Considering the Red Riots have won four games by more than eight runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Maegan Berry made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Olive Manns was excellent, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Sadie Soucy was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
South Portland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 5-2 when they post 11 or more hits.
South Portland has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-7 record this season. As for Gorham, with the loss, they broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 12-4.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Gorham has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .446. However, it's not like South Portland struggles in that department as they've averaged .453. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Gorham was able to grind out a solid win over South Portland in their previous meeting back in April, winning 8-4. Do the Rams have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Red Riots turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
