NEPSAC Freelance recap November 5, 2013
Deerfield Academy scaled the state rankings by moving to 37 from 145 this week, the biggest jump in NEPSAC Freelance. The Big Green climbed the ranks as a result of losing to Cushing Academy 34-12.
Phillips Academy added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Worcester Academy, 47-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Phillips Academy's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ian Maag threw for 210 and 3 touchdowns and Matt Rusk-Kosa had 76 yards receiving. On the ground Ryder Stone contributed 173 yards. Brandon Michel helped Phillips Academy's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 44 yards.
He was 9-12 with 1 interception.
Maag put up the best numbers through the air as Leon Modeste's team defeated the Hilltoppers. Maag's favorite target this week was Rusk-Kosa, who caught 3 passes for 76 yards.
Phillips Academy's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Big Blues feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Maag has thrown for 980 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while Michel has 17 catches for 352 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Phillips Exeter Academy and the Big Blues. The Lions enters the game ranked eighth in the state, while Phillips Academy ranks 11th.
The Penguins were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating Deerfield Academy. Cushing Academy came in at 24 in the state poll after placing at number 122 last week.
