O'Connor and Red Mountain are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Eagles will challenge the Mountain Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as O'Connor comes in on three and Red Mountain on seven.
O'Connor is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Sunnyside, who was ranked 15th at the time (O'Connor was ranked fourth). The Eagles came out on top against the Blue Devils by a score of 8-3 on Saturday. That's two games straight that the Eagles have won by exactly five runs.
Rachel Davis spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits.
At the plate, Sydnee Williams was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Charleigh Schuettler, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: O'Connor kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 12-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Red Mountain never let their opponents score on Saturday. They put the hurt on Corona del Sol with a sharp 16-0 victory. Considering the Mountain Lions have won 14 games by more than eight runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Saige Peters was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Payton Westra, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs.
Red Mountain's win was their 11th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 19-4-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for O'Connor, their record now sits at 20-10.
Both O'Connor and Red Mountain just can't seem to miss. The Eagles have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.3 hits per game. However, it's not like Red Mountain struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
O'Connor couldn't quite get it done against Red Mountain when the teams last played two weeks ago as they fell 8-3. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
