The Coloma Comets will venture away from home to square off against the Paw Paw Red Wolves at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Coloma is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.
Coloma made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Watervliet, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Comets fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 7-5 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Comets have suffered since May 21, 2024.
Paw Paw came out on top against Otsego on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Red Wolves were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over the Bulldogs. The result was nothing new for the Red Wolves, who have now won 12 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Gunnar Goodell made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andrew Lehto, who went 2-for-3 with two triples, three RBI, and two runs. Those two triples gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Remi Dempsey, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Paw Paw was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Otsego only posted a batting average of .250.
Paw Paw is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Coloma, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-11.
Coloma suffered a grim 7-1 defeat to Paw Paw in their previous matchup back in May of 2023. Can the Comets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
