Skyline and Mesa are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but likely not for long. The Coyotes will welcome the Jackrabbits at 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
On Thursday, Skyline came up short against Red Mountain and fell 7-4.
Skyline saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Owen Claridge, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Mesa came out on top against Dobson on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run fifth inning. The Jackrabbits blew past the Mustangs 14-3. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Jackrabbits.
Johnny Urquijo was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gerardo Sanchez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Mesa's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 4-14 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Osmar Hurtado Lora, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Mesa always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .590. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Mesa's victory bumped their record up to 7-14. As for Skyline, their loss dropped their record down to 12-9.
Skyline's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's matchup. The Coyotes have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mesa, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Skyline continue to outrun the ball?
Skyline came out on top in a nail-biter against Mesa when the teams last played back in April of 2025, sneaking past 4-3. Will the Coyotes repeat their success, or do the Jackrabbits have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
