Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Marshfield (Coos Bay, Ore.) senior
Dom Montiel is the 2021 MaxPreps Oregon High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder and three-sport standout led the Pirates to 15-0 record and a state Division 4A championship by throwing for 3,666 yards and 50 touchdowns. The dual threat also rushed for 320 yards and seven more scores.
In the state title game, he completed 28-of-44 passes for 438 yards passing and five touchdowns as the Pirates defeated Marist 49-34. Besides passing 44 times, Montiel also rushed 18 times for 100 yards and another score as Marshfield raced to a 42-27 halftime lead before letting off the gas somewhat in the second half.
It was the third time Montiel went over 400 yards passing in a game, including an earlier game against Marist, when he fired a career-high seven touchdown passes in a 48-41 win.
Montiel finished with more than 7,300 career passing yards and 86 touchdowns to go with 13 rushing touchdowns. He has only one college offer, according to 247Sports, and that's to Portland State.
One look at his highlight tape and Montiel obviously is a playmaker. He has an innate ability to feel pressure, evade it and throw on the money.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for
inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in
early January.
