5A District 8 recap October 22, 2013
Letcher County Central and Perry County Central played the closest game in 5A District 8 this week, with Letcher County Central eventually emerging with a 22-18 victory.
Fred Massey was a force in the backfield as Harlan County defeated Whitley County.
Massey was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 245 yards on 20 carries as the Black Bears fell to the Cougars / Lady Cougars. Teammate Carson Whitehead added to the ground attack by rushing for 65 yards.
Perry County Central's Nathan Pray and Fugate led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 5-10 quarterback Pray has thrown for 783 yards this season, while Fugate has 22 catches for 329 yards. Whitehead from Harlan County leads the league in rushing with 705 yards.
The top two teams in 5A District 8 will face off this week when first place Harlan County takes on second place Perry County Central. Tom Larkey's team topped the Colonels last week, while Justin Haddix's team lost to Letcher County Central.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Commodores and the Black Bears face off next week.
There should be lots of points scored when Harlan County and Perry County Central face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Black Bears comes in having scored 265 this season, while the Commodores have scored 200. Harlan County scored 51 points last week as it beat Whitley County.
The Black Bears led the league in scoring this week by notching 51 points on Jim Black's team. Massey ran for 245 yards during the win.
