The Apollo Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Daviess County Panthers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Apollo is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
Apollo is headed into the match out to prove that what happened against Trigg County on Monday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Apollo came up short against Trigg County, falling 54-30. The Eagles were down 47-20 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Lashay Vera, who posted eight points and six rebounds. Maleah Potter also deserves some recognition as she scored her first points of the season.
Meanwhile, Daviess County was fully in charge on Monday, breezing past Union County 61-26. The Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 20 points or more this season.
Daviess County's win came from a few key players Apollo will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Zoey Beehn, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards. She is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kennedy Lane, who went 5 of 12 on her way to 15 points.
Daviess County was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive contests.
Apollo's loss dropped their record down to 2-16. As for Daviess County, the win got them back to even at 11-11.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Apollo has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 28.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Daviess County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.7 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Apollo took a serious blow against Daviess County when the teams last played two weeks ago, falling 71-13. That match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Apollo was down 51-9.
