It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Scales Mound Hornets ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 64-61 win over Polo. Given Scales Mound's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 195th, while Polo is ranked 414th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Scales Mound got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Thomas Hereau out in front who scored 22 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Derrick Distler was another key contributor, going 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points and 1 assist.
Polo's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Gus Mumford, who went 8 for 13 from beyond the arc en route to 25 points and 0 assists, and Brock Soltow who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mumford has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nolan Hahn, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
The win makes it two in a row for Scales Mound and bumps their season record up to 16-5. As for Polo, their loss dropped their record down to 10-8.
Scales Mound will head out on the road to square off against River Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully River Ridge focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Saturday. As for Polo, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Amboy at 7:30 p.m. Amboy is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
