The Russell Red Devils will head out on the road to face off against the Raceland Rams at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Russell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Russell will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Paintsville on Thursday. The Red Devils put the hurt on the Tigers with a sharp 11-1 win.
Karson Honaker made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. Honaker was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Gabby Oborne was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Madilynn Hayes also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Meanwhile, Raceland fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Boyd County on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 16-11 to the Lions. Even if the Rams couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
Bryna Wellman made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Baylee Burney, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Raceland's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 21-8. As for Russell, their record now sits at 9-15.
Russell came up short against Raceland in their previous matchup last Tuesday, falling 11-6. Can the Red Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
