The Ponaganset Chieftains will venture away from home to take on the Moses Brown Quakers at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Ponaganset is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Ponaganset played in-conference for the first time on Monday and got just the result they were looking for. They blew past St. Mary Academy-Bay View 12-2. The Chieftains' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Mattea Mello made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. Mello was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kyla Angell, who went 3-for-4 with five RBI, three runs, and one stolen base. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Claire Barrett, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one double.
Ponaganset hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Mary Academy-Bay View struck out six times.
Meanwhile, Moses Brown was not able to break out of their rough patch last Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-8 heartbreaker at the hands of Pilgrim.
Elodie Cannon and Ava Lourenco did some serious damage despite the final result: Cannon went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Lourenco went 3-for-5 with three runs and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Coco Medeiros, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
The win got Ponaganset back to even at 2-2. As for Moses Brown, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.
Ponaganset might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from Moses Brown in their previous meeting back in June of 2016. Can the Chieftains avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
