Softball Recap: Montrose Wins Going Away Against Gunnison

After only one run in their last game, Montrose made sure to put some runs up on the board against Gunnison on Wednesday. The Red Hawks blew past the Cowboys 10-1. Considering the Red Hawks have won 12 contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Bentley Schiller made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in September. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Isabelle Mott was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in September of 2024. Another player making a difference was Abby Siegel, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with two RBI.

Montrose hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gunnison struck out 13 times.

Montrose is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Gunnison, they dropped their record down to 7-10 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight at home.

Coming up, Montrose will welcome Palisade at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season. As for Gunnison, they will venture away from home to take on Meeker at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Meeker has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.94 runs per game on average), something Gunnison will no doubt try to take advantage of.
