Softball Recap: Mt. Shasta Takes a Loss

Mt. Shasta had lost four straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 9-10-1 to make it five. They fell 8-4 to the Modoc Braves. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Braves this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-1 on Friday.

Emily Pigoni was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off only two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Pigoni wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kaley Lanier, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Lanier is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.

As for Modoc, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games.

Like Mt. Shasta, Modoc also got a great game from a two-way player: Caelli DePaul. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off eight hits. DePaul was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Mt. Shasta is set to face off against their familiar foe Trinity at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Modoc will square off against rival Etna at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
