Softball Game Preview: Scituate Spartans vs. East Greenwich Avengers

Scituate has gone a perfect 3-0 against East Greenwich recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Spartans will venture away from home to challenge the Avengers at 4:30 p.m. Scituate has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with three straight defeats, while East Greenwich will come in with three straight wins.

Toll Gate hit Scituate with a five-run sixth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans lost 7-0 to the Titans. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Spartans were not able to get on the board.

Isabella Defusco was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask East Greenwich). Everything went their way against North Providence on Tuesday as they made off with a 17-1 victory. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Avengers with their most commanding win of the season.

The team relied heavily on Maura Taylor, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Brooke Fairbanks, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

East Greenwich kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 11.8.

East Greenwich's win bumped their record up to 7-4. As for Scituate, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.

Everything went Scituate's way against East Greenwich in their previous matchup back in May of 2019, as Scituate made off with a 14-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
