Claiborne extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 12-14 in the process. They came up short against the Volunteer Falcons, falling 11-2. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Falcons this season, with their most recent defeat being a 10-0 loss two weeks ago.
Garrett Keiter put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
In other batting news, Emery Keiter was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
As for Volunteer, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-20. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games.
On Volunteer's side, Hunter Shepherd tossed a big game, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave Shepherd a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Gavin Hickernell was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has become a key player for Volunteer: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-20 otherwise. Brycen Feagins was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
As of now, neither Claiborne nor Volunteer have any future games scheduled.
