Mendon is 9-1 against Marcellus since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Hornets will face off against the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Mendon has three straight wins, Marcellus has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Mendon is headed into the game having just posted their closest victory since June 8, 2024 on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Burr Oak 1-0. Those one runs were actually the fewest the Hornets have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Not much got past Ally Butler, who gave up just three hits and racked up nine Ks to keep Burr Oak off the board. Butler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mendon saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rowan Allen, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Decatur hit Marcellus with a six-run third inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Wildcats came up short against the Raiders, falling 12-2.
Carlyn Deer was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. Aubree Kruger also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Marcellus' defeat dropped their record down to 10-15. As for Mendon, their victory bumped their record up to 23-2.
Mendon's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Hornets have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Marcellus, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mendon continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Mendon's way against Marcellus when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Mendon made off with a 23-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
