Springfield and Coventry are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Spartans will be playing at home against the Comets at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Springfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Springfield barely beat Ravenna the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Spartans put the hurt on the Ravens with a sharp 7-1 victory on Monday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Spartans.
Aaliyah Boswell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits.
On the hitting side, Breanna Ruggiero was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and one double while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jill Inch, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Springfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. They are 4-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, after some red-hot attacks at the plate in their last four games, Coventry finally came back down to earth on Monday. They fell just short of Field by a score of 3-1. The defeat continues a trend for the Comets in their meetings with the Falcons: they've now lost five in a row.
Coventry also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Addisyn Hahn gave up three earned runs on eight hits.
At the plate, Isabella Smith was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Coventry's loss dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Springfield, their win bumped their record up to 6-7.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Springfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .359. However, it's not like Coventry struggles in that department as they've averaged .408. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Springfield couldn't quite get it done against Coventry in their previous meeting on April 9th as they fell 11-6. Will the Spartans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
