The Zionsville Eagles are taking a road trip to square off against the Cathedral Fighting Irish at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Zionsville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Zionsville didn't have quite enough to beat Fishers and fell 2-1. That's two games in a row now that the Eagles have lost by just one run.
Peter Ward was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in hits (zero).
At the plate, Riley Agbonhese made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Cathedral, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand St. Xavier an 11-0 shutout on Saturday. The Fighting Irish might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by six runs or more this season.
Landon Hughes tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Eli Bennett was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season. Tyler Carlos was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Cathedral always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Xavier only posted an OBP of .263.
Cathedral's victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Zionsville, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-4.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Zionsville has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .443. However, it's not like Cathedral struggles in that department as they've averaged .463. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Zionsville suffered a grim 10-2 defeat to Cathedral when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
