Nasir Nelson made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over 5.1 innings pitched. Seventy-First is 2-1 when Nelson allowsone or fewer hits, but 1-6 otherwise. Nelson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cory Bush, who scored two runs and stole six bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Melvin Correa Martinez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing five bases while going 1-for-3.
Seventy-First always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Purnell Swett didn't have quite enough to beat Lumberton on Tuesday and fell 3-2. The Rams have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Like Seventy-First, Purnell Swett also got a great game from a two-way player: Chandon Sanderson. He struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Sanderson was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3.
Sanderson wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Conley Jacobs, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Seventy-First's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 3-7. As for Purnell Swett, they now have a losing record of 5-6.
