The Phoenix Firebirds will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Marcellus Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on January 19th.
Two weeks ago, Phoenix had to suffer through a rough 79-52 loss at the hands of Bishop Ludden.
Meanwhile, Marcellus waltzed into their matchup on Monday with three straight wins but they left with four. They came out on top against Bishop Kearney by a score of 71-62. Given Marcellus' advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 12th, while Bishop Kearney is ranked 316th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Marcellus' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tucker Burnett led the charge by dropping a double-double on 14 points and 11 assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Burnett, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds.
Phoenix's defeat dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Marcellus, they pushed their record up to 13-1 with that win, which was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season.
Phoenix ended up a good deal behind Marcellus in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, losing 69-51. Can Phoenix avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
