Even though the Lely Trojans scored an imposing 65 points on Friday, the Gateway Eagles still came out on top. Gateway took their game against Lely 76-65. Given Gateway's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 126th, while Lely is ranked 494th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Gateway to victory were Tyler Diaz and Tavian Cook. Diaz scored 16 points along with six assists and three steals, while Cook scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Cook has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Qur'an Pettyjohn Jr, who scored eight points along with two steals.
Gateway is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-2 record this season. As for Lely, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-12.
Gateway's road trip will continue as they head out to face Belen Jesuit at 2:30 p.m. on January 15th. Belen Jesuit will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. Lely will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Community School of Naples at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
