The Basalt Longhorns will venture away from home to challenge the Colorado Academy Mustangs at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Basalt is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Basalt lost 10-2 to Coal Ridge on Saturday. The Longhorns haven't had much luck with the Titans recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Elias Schendler made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Colorado Academy entered their tilt with Jefferson Academy on Friday with seven consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with eight. They put the hurt on the Jaguars with a sharp 14-4 win. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won six games by six runs or more so far this season.
Ben Bridich made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kieran Delaney, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Charlie Rakowski was another key player, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run.
Colorado Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .367 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Colorado Academy's victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Basalt, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Basalt hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .322. However, it's not like Colorado Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .313. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Basalt might still be hurting after the 17-4 loss they got from Colorado Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Longhorns avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
