ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Special teams carried
Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) to a 71-25 victory over Asheville (N.C.) on Saturday as the return units contributed five touchdowns. The special teams of the Warriors scored on three kick returns and two punt returns.
After taking the lead on a
Zach Goins touchdown pass to
Dillon Dunn in the first quarter, Weddington was up 44-0 at the half.
By the end of the third, WHS found itself trailing by 25 points as the Cougars captured the lead thanks to one score in the quarter. Asheville scored on a field goal in the quarter.
Even though the Matthews school led by 25 points at the start of the fourth quarter, it didn't let up, scoring 82 in the quarter.
AHS came in giving up 14.7 points per game this season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Asheville, who notched a 33-7 victory over Cuthbertson in its previous outing. The win brought Weddington's winning streak to four games.
Weddington (11-2) goes up against Asheville School when they take the field next week. The Blues have put together a 0-9 record on the year so far.
