GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A big 28-point first quarter helped carry the Tigers to a 42-12 victory over Grand Junction Central (Grand Junction, Colo.) on Saturday.
Grand Junction scored on four rushing touchdowns in the quarter, including two by
Dion Martinez.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Martinez in the first quarter, GJ led 42-0 at the half.
A 28-point first quarter set the table for the Tigers, which coasted the rest of the way for the victory.
Mike Price made a difference for the Warriors. The junior quarterback threw two touchdowns.
Martinez played well for Grand Junction in the victory. The junior ran for two touchdowns and caught one touchdown. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.
Led by
Austin Berk, GJ entered the contest giving up 18.3 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding Grand Junction Central right around its season average of 14.9 points scored per game.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 47-0 win for Grand Junction.
The win was a nice bounce back for GJ, which lost to Montrose last week, 41-21.
GJC (0-9) will play a 4A/5A Southwest game against Montrose next week. The Indians will bring a record of 5-3 into the meeting.
