Wake Forest pushed their score all the way to 42 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Millbrook by a score of 45-42.
Wake Forest might have lost, but man, Rico Alston was a machine: he rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries. Another player making a difference was Kavon Simmons, who threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, after only seven points in their last match, Garner made sure to put some points up on the board against Corinth Holders on Friday. Everything went Garner's way against Corinth Holders as Garner made off with a 37-14 victory. Given Garner's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 76th, while Corinth Holders is ranked 215th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Garner to victory, but perhaps none more so than Isaiah Dawson, who picked up 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Cameron Quillet made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Millbrook's win bumped their season record to 8-2 while Wake Forest's defeat dropped theirs to 6-4.
Everything went Wake Forest's way against Garner in their previous meeting back in February of 2021 as Wake Forest made off with a 33-7 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Garner's Markyell Royster, who rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.8 yards per carry. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Wake Forest to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
