The Westfield Area Pioneers will take on the Markesan Hornets at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Westfield Area is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Westfield Area had been on a three-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Nekoosa put an end to it on Thursday. The Pioneers fell 7-2 to the Papermakers. Surprisingly, this marked the Pioneers' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Natalee Meinke spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Westfield Area saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Izzy Nelson, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Markesan). Everything went their way against Montello on Thursday as they made off with a 17-1 victory. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Hilltoppers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Hannah Stellmacher was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in May of 2024. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and four RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Ali Kirker was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jaelyn Walker, who got on base in three of her six plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
Westfield Area's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Markesan, their victory bumped their record up to 2-4.
Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Westfield Area has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447. However, it's not like Markesan struggles in that department as they've averaged .478. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westfield Area might still be hurting after the 10-4 loss they got from Markesan in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can the Pioneers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
