Thoreau hasn't had much luck against Navajo Prep recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Hawks are taking a road trip to challenge the Eagles at 3:00 p.m. Thoreau has given up an average of 15.1 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Thoreau came up short against Newcomb on Thursday, falling 20-9. The Hawks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Navajo Prep came tearing into Tuesday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They had just enough and edged out the Cougars 13-11. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since April 3rd.
Leilani Wood made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Isabella Yazzie was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Amia Salazar, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and four runs.
Navajo Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in ten consecutive games.
Navajo Prep's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 25.5 runs over those games. As for Thoreau, their loss dropped their record down to 8-13.
Thoreau might still be hurting after the 21-2 defeat they got from Navajo Prep when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Hawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
