South Pike proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by 20) but on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Port Gibson 37-35. Winning is a bit easier when your three-point shooting is a whole 21% better than the opposition, as South Pike's was.
Makayla Robertson and Alaysha Williams were among the main playmakers for South Pike as the former scored nine points along with five steals and the latter dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Robertson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Shalia Johnson, who scored five points along with two steals.
South Pike is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. As for Port Gibson, their win bumped their record up to 16-7.
Friday's contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: South Pike have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 50.8% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Port Gibson struggles in that department as they've made 37% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
South Pike came out on top in a nail-biter against Port Gibson when the teams last played on Friday, sneaking past 37-35. Does South Pike have another victory up their sleeve, or will Port Gibson turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
