After flying high against the Telluride Miners on Friday, the Steamboat Springs Sailors came back down to earth. Steamboat Springs fell 31-24 to Gunnison on Saturday. Steamboat Springs has not had much luck with Gunnison recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Steamboat Springs' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hailey Bender, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds. Those eight rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Naomi Baumgartner, who scored two points along with four steals.
Kylee McDougal continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Gunnison, scoring 16 points. Sienna Gomez was another key contributor, scoring five points along with seven rebounds.
Steamboat Springs' defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Gunnison, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
Steamboat Springs and Rifle will face off at 5:30 p.m. on January 5, 2024 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Rifle is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
