The Weld Central Rebels's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They were beaten by Berthoud 63-27. Weld Central has struggled against the Spartans recently, as their game on Thursday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the loss, Weld Central had strong showings from Riley Phelps, who scored seven points along with 17 rebounds and three steals, and Jazlyn Ontiveros, who scored no points.
Berthoud found their leader in underclassman Avery Pfohl, who shot 5-for-11 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 48 points and nine steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Pfohl has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ellie Harper, who scored five points along with three steals.
Weld Central dropped their record down to 5-13 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight at home. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 22.8 points per game. As for Berthoud, their victory bumped their record up to 6-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Weld Central's homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on February 6th. Sterling will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Berthoud, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. University presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Spartans in Colorado (the Bulldogs are ranked 35th, while the Spartans are ranked 180th).
