The Nitro Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Winfield Generals at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Nitro focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Monday.
Last Monday, Nitro faced St. Albans in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Nitro secured a 46-40 W over St. Albans. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Nitro.
Nitro's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Karson Jones, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds, and Natalie Smith, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds. The contest was Jones' third in a row with at least ten points.
Meanwhile, Winfield scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They walked away with a 57-46 win over Poca. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 19 to 11 on the offensive boards, as Winfield did.
Winfield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ashlee Johnson led the charge by scoring ten points along with nine rebounds. Johnson set a new season high mark in blocks with two. Kaitlyn Sayre was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Nitro's win ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-1. As for Winfield, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
Friday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Nitro have been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 40% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Winfield, though, as they've only drained 30.5% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Nitro couldn't quite finish off Winfield when the teams last played back in February and fell 44-42. Thankfully for Nitro, Meghan Taylor (who scored 23 points) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
