Luke Babin had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 288 yards and five TDs while completing 80% of his passes. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (160.4). Gage Tolar was another key player, picking up 68 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Woodville's run defense was locked in: Warren could only muster 3.2 yards per carry. While two picked up at least five total tackles, Luis Obregon stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks and made five total tackles. Woodville didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 7.3.
Woodville didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Saineko Mitchell and James Kelley. Mitchell is on a roll when it comes to interceptions, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Woodville got some further help from Obregon: he picked up two sacks and made five total tackles.
Meanwhile, Newton was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past New Waverly 54-0. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won four games by 20 points or more so far this season.
Newton's win came from a few key players Woodville will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kendray Porter, who rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries, and also picked up 35 receiving yards and one TD. Another player making a difference was Deldrick Samuel, who gained 128 total yards and two touchdowns.
Newton's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB five times. In that department, Ivan Gatson was the leader with two sacks.
Newton's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Woodville, their win bumped their record up to an identical 5-1.
The upcoming matchup will be a clash of competing strengths. Woodville has relied on air attacks this season and has averaged 267 passing yards per game.
