Baseball Recap: Cordia Sets Scoring Season-High Against Oneida Baptist Institute

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cordia). Everything went their way against the Oneida Baptist Institute Mountaineers on Tuesday as they made off with a 17-6 victory. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Lions as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Riley Melton made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. He is becoming a predictor of Cordia's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is 3-1 (and 0-17 when he doesn't). Melton was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Bryson Perkins was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Cordia is 3-1 when Perkins posts two or more stolen bases, but 0-17 otherwise. Ayden Miniard was another key player, going 1-for-4 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.

Cordia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Cordia's victory bumped their record up to 3-18. As for Oneida Baptist Institute, they dropped their record down to 0-4 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Cordia will welcome Red Bird at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.63 runs per game on average), something the Lions will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Oneida Baptist Institute, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Owsley County at 6:00 p.m. on May 12.
