Blacksburg has gone a perfect 4-0 against High Point Academy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. Blacksburg will take on High Point Academy at 6:00 p.m. High Point Academy took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Blacksburg, who comes in off a win.
Blacksburg was handed a six-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Monday. They won by a run and slipped past Spartanburg 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wildcats have posted against the Vikings since March 15, 2021.
Lucy Thayer was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That double was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Morgan Merritt was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that she hit this season. Another player making a difference was Taylor Tessner, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.
Blacksburg kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, High Point Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of Broome. One positive for the Grizzlies, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
High Point Academy saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cadence Courtney, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Those two hits gave Courtney a new career-high. Emily Hart was another, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Blacksburg now has a winning record of 4-3. As for High Point Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 0-6.
High Point Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Blacksburg hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .365. It's a different story for High Point Academy, though, as they've only averaged .243. Will they be able to contain Blacksburg's hitters?
Blacksburg took their win against High Point Academy when the teams last played back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 9-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Blacksburg since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
