Basketball Recap: Highland Tech Comes Up Short

Highland Tech easily dispatched Cherryville last Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Highland Tech Rams fell just short of the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets by a score of 58-55 on Wednesday. The Rams were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Yellow Jackets earlier this season, when they won 68-58.

When it comes to explaining why Highland Tech lost, don't look at Elijah Sherrill. Despite the final result, he went 12-for-21 en route to 33 points in addition to eight boards and five assists. The match was Sherrill's 26th in a row with at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Coleman Schafer, who posted nine points.

Bessemer City was led to victory by Josiah Guyton and Tristen Gordon. Guyton went 7-for-12 to rack up 18 points and six assists, while Gordon dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten assists. That's the most assists Guyton has posted since back in December of 2024. Raheem Mcclure was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Highland Tech has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 10-12 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.0 points over those games. As for Bessemer City, they pushed their record up to 14-10 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Coming up, Highland Tech will take on East Gaston at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. East Gaston knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Highland Tech likes a good challenge. Bessemer City does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
