Avione Allgood's first international track and field meet didn't go as well as she probably would have liked.
But Allgood certainly bounced back at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday in Sacramento, Calif.
Allgood, who will be a junior at Legacy (North Las Vegas, Nev.) this fall, set a national record in the javelin throw as she captured first place in the young women's division. Allgood's throw of 158 feet, 7 inches (48.33 meters) smashed the previous record of 148-6/45.27m that was set in 2009 by Ashley Aldredge of Ruston, La.
Allgood, who was the intermediate girls champion in the javelin last year, also finished third in the shot put (44-1 1/2/13.45m), fourth in the discus (139-2/42.41m) and 14th in the hammer throw while competing for the Vegas Valley Track Club.
Allgood represented the U.S. at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, from July 19-25. She finshed 16th overall with a mark of 48 meters, which is well off her personal record of 49.71m/163-1 set at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Des Moines, Iowa, in June.
Allgood is scheduled to compete this week at the AAU Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Va.
Roquemore off to Santa Clara
Evan Roquemore, a former all-state point guard at Foothill (Henderson), finally got the offer he had been waiting for this summer and enrolled at Santa Clara last week.
The 6-foot-2 standout had offers from Air Force, Ball State, Eastern Washington and Southern Methodist.
Roquemore also considered enrolling at a prep school, but all that changed when Broncos coach Kerry Keating offered a scholarship.
"It’s definitely exciting," Roquemore told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "All the hard work paid off."
Roquemore earned Southeast League Most Valuable Player honors in the spring as he averaged 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists while leading Foothill to the Sunrise Region final. Roquemore also had a solid showing this summer with Dream Vision 17s out of California, which featured Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) star Shabazz Muhammad and Findlay Prep (Henderson) junior swingman Winston Shepard.
Roquemore hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift Dream Vision into the round of eight at the adidas Super 64 tournament last month.
"We are pleased to add Evan to our 2010 class, especially late in the process," Keating said in a statement. "Evan has shown a high level of ability in the classroom and on the court and we are anxious to have those dividends pay off for our and his family.
"Evan possesses very good athleticism, scoring ability as well as an understanding of the game that should make his transition to college smooth and give him an ability to help the team in a variety of ways. Heading into this past summer with an open mind about his college future, Evan performed well in competition at a high level, something we know will translate in the near future."
Stallworth steps down
Rollins Stallworth, the head football coach at Hug (Reno) since 1993 and the dean of high school coaches in the Reno area, stepped down recently to become an assistant principal at a local middle school.
Athletic director and offensive coordinator Brad Bodine will take over as the interim coach. Practices begin Aug. 12 and the season starts Aug. 27.
Stallworth was the longest-tenured active coach in the Washoe County School District and a fixture on the area athletic scene. Only Douglas (Minden) football coach Mike Rippee, who is set to begin is 25th season, has been on the sidelines longer than Stallworth in Northern Nevada.
Under Stallworth, the Hawks were perennial contenders in the 4A Northern Region and advanced to the 2005 state title game.
"That season will always be very special to me," Stallworth told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "We built a very formidable program and I'm very proud of that. But my greatest memory will be staying as long as I did and maintaining the level of the program through some obstacles, like when McQueen opened and when North Valleys opened and drastically changed our enrollment and student body."
UNLV baseball lands three more
Three more local baseball players gave non-binding verbal commitments to UNLV and new coach Tim Chambers, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Catcher Erik Van Meetren and infielder/pitcher T.J. White of five-time defending 4A state champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), along with Rancho (Las Vegas) pitcher Eric Holdren, are all expected to sign a letter of intent with the Rebels when the fall signing period begins Nov. 10.
UNLV has now secured commitments from five local players since Chambers was hired June 11 after leading College of Southern Nevada to the NJCAA World Series. Infielder Brandon Pletsch and pitcher Zak Qualls of Rancho previously committed to the Rebels.
Holdren, like Qualls, changed his mind after previously committing to San Diego State. He was a first-team all-state pick as a junior after going 9-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings for the Rams.
Van Meetren batted .356 with eight homers and 33 RBIs for the Gaels last season and tied a national record as a sophomore when he blasted five home runs in one game. White was a second-team all-state selection after he hit .438 with seven home runs and 54 RBIs. He also was 8-1 with a 3.67 ERA on the mound.
Delgado headed to Oregon
Amanda Delgado of Liberty (Henderson) became the second girls basketball player from Southern Nevada to make a verbal commitment to a Division I school when she pledged to Oregon last week.
Delgado, a rising senior guard, was a second-team all-state pick as a junior. She averaged 17.6 points and helped the Patriots earn their first Sunrise Region title and state tournament appearance. Oregon was the first school to offer Delgado a scholarship.
"(Paul Westhead is) a legendary coach," Delgado told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "My high school coaches thought it was a great fit, and my parents think it’s great."
Delgado is expected to make an official recruiting visit to Oregon in the fall.
Centennial (Las Vegas) guard Courtney Hayes earlier committed to Louisiana Tech.
