Basketball Game Preview: South Summit Wildcats vs. Morgan Trojans

South Summit hasn't had much luck against Morgan recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The South Summit Wildcats are taking a road trip to face off against the Morgan Trojans at 7:00 p.m. South Summit is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.8 points per game this season.

South Summit is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Grantsville on Tuesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. South Summit was beaten by Grantsville 69-38. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 58th, while the Cowboys are ranked fourth).

Despite the loss, South Summit got top-tier performance from Emma Broadbent, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 17 rebounds. Broadbent has been hot for a while, having posted 12 or more boards the last 39 times she's played.

Even though they lost, South Summit smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Morgan over Union in every quarter on their way to victory on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Morgan blew Union out of the water with a 72-32 final score. The matchup marked the Trojans' most dominant victory of the season.

Morgan's win bumped their record up to 8-9. As for South Summit, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 11-5.

South Summit came up short against Morgan when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 65-56. Can South Summit avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
