The Lafayette Rams entered their tilt with the Poquoson Islanders with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Lafayette took down Poquoson 57-39 on Friday. Given Lafayette's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 59th, while Poquoson is ranked 371st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lafayette to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jarquez Garrett, who scored 17 points along with three steals. Garrett hasn't dropped below two steals for 16 straight games. Another player making a difference was Wayne Santos Jr, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
When it comes to explaining why Poquoson lost, one person who can't be blamed is Khaleo Smith. Despite the final result, he scored 19 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. Daniel Sperling was another key contributor, scoring two points along with ten rebounds.
Lafayette has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. As for Poquoson, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-16.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lafayette's road trip will continue as they head out to face York at 7:00 p.m. on February 5th. York is on a three-game streak of home wins, Lafayette a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Poquoson, they will head out on the road to square off against Arcadia at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Averaging 68.22 points so far this season, Arcadia's high-powered offense has been in full-swing lately, so Poquoson better be ready for a challenge.
