After flying high against the Sweetwater Red Devils two weeks ago, the La Jolla Vikings came back down to earth. La Jolla took a 71-64 hit to the loss column at the hands of Point Loma on Friday. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
La Jolla lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Michael Contreras, who scored 24 points along with five rebounds. Contreras scored a full 37.5% of La Jolla's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Marley Lafond, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Point Loma to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nick Freeman, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. Freeman hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for three straight games. Grant Stewart was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with six rebounds.
La Jolla's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-7. As for Point Loma, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-5.
La Jolla will be playing in front of their home fans against Crawford at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Crawford's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three games. Point Loma won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Pacific Ridge at 4:00 p.m. on January 6th. Pacific Ridge will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 1129th, while Point Loma is ranked 407th).
